With its various locations and facilities the "Städtische Bibliotheken Dresden" (Dresden Public Libraries) offer its users various ways of making the best possible use of its large and diverse collection.
An extensive system of branch libraries caters for all inhabitants of a specific residential area. Every library branch offers, among other items, a collection especially designed for children, which can also be used by smaller children. The mobile library stops in all the areas of Dresden that have no direct access to a permanent branch.

In 2000, the "medien@age - Die Neue Dresdner Jugendbibliothek" (New Dresden Youth Library) was opened in the Prager Strasse, one of Dresden's main shopping areas. Here, young people can find a library stock relevant to them. The collection of CDs, movies and software is the most extensive of the entire network and 12 computers with Internet access offer the possibility to surf the Internet and to chat/e-mail with friends. Furthermore, this library gives its users the possibility to listen to music and to watch films directly on-site. There is even the chance to work on computers with applications like office and photo processing software.

Bertolt Brecht High School |
The public school library in the Bertolt-Brecht-Gymnasium (high school) is especially focused on the needs of pupils in the area. It not only affords resources for school and education, but also information about hobbies and leisure time activities. Adults are welcome to use this library, too.
The centre of the network is constituted by the "Haupt- und Musikbibliothek" (Main and Music Library), which has its location in the World Trade Center, Freiberger Strasse. With nearly 270,000 media items, this library offers the biggest collection of the entire network. Visitors are welcome to work in a reading room or on one of the 12 computers which are equipped with Internet access. A distinctive feature of the main library is the detailed collection of 50,000 items of sheet music, which has grown throughout our history.

The department of "Soziale Bibliotheksarbeit" (Social library work) organises the delivery of media items to issuing counters in the suburbs of Dresden, to children's homes, to residential homes for the elderly and to schools. As a part of that department the "Bücherhausdienst" (Residential book service) provides older readers and those who are confined to their homes with a special collection including large-print editions and audiobooks.
